Description: In South Lake, Perth WA, we were recently asked to transform a beautiful 56m² stretch of jarrah flooring that had been laid but needed expert finishing. The homeowner wanted more than a simple sand and polish — she hoped to highlight the unique character of her timber while giving the surface a clean, refined look. This project became a perfect example of how restoring old timber floors can completely reshape the warmth and personality of a home, especially in hallways with wooden floors that see daily foot traffic.
After inspecting the floors, the client shared her vision of filling each nail hole and enhancing the natural variations in the jarrah boards. Rather than using a traditional colour-matched filler, she specifically requested ebony wood filler to create a striking contrast. This bold choice added depth and accentuated the natural grain patterns, giving the floors a distinctive, contemporary finish while still honouring the classic beauty of jarrah.
Once all nail holes and timber features were filled, we began a detailed sanding process to bring the surface back to a perfectly even, smooth state. Restoring old timber floors requires patience and precision, especially when working with jarrah, which is renowned for its density and rich colouring. The sanding revealed stunning undertones in the timber and the ebony-filled features added a refined but artistic touch.
To complete the transformation, we applied a solvent-based satin finish, which provided the perfect balance between sheen and natural texture. The satin coating enhanced the warm hues of the jarrah while ensuring durability for hallways with wooden floors that experience regular use.
The end result was a beautifully restored timber floor that now feels elegant, modern and full of character—an inviting feature from the moment you step into the home.
If you’re in Perth and looking to refresh your space, restoring old timber floors can be one of the most rewarding ways to bring new life into your home. Let the natural beauty of your timber shine again.
